UPDATE FOR HRM PENSION PLAN MEMBERS REGARDING CONTRIBUTION REDUCTION
As described in the February 2026 Notice to Plan Members, the Pension Committee for the Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan (the “Plan”) passed a motion in December 2025 to reduce employee and employer contribution rates by 2% each effective June 28, 2026. For more details on the reduction, please refer to the February 2026 Notice posted on the Plan’s website.
After this motion was passed, it was determined that an arbitration process was necessary to review whether the contribution reduction decision needed to be ratified by the Plan’s Sponsor Unions and the Municipality. On April 24, the Arbitrator issued a decision that a ratification process was required before implementing the contribution reduction.
As a result of the arbitration decision, the timing of any possible contribution rate change is unknown. We will post more details on the Plan’s website when available.
